10th Ayurveda Day celebrated at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru
ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, celebrated the 10th Ayurveda Day under the chairmanship of Dr. T.K. Behera, Director, ICAR-IIHR on 23rd September 2025. Dr. Lalitha B.R., Professor (Retd.), Government Ayurveda Medical College, was the Chief Guest while Dr. Subrahmanya Kumar, Associate Professor, Transdisciplinary University, Bengaluru. Was the guest of honor. The event was graced by senior scientists including Dr. G.R. Smitha, Dr. V. Sreenivasa, and Dr. Naveen Kumar, head of Division of Flower & medicinal crops. The Programme began with welcome address by Dr. G.R. Smitha, Principal Scientist. Following this, Dr. P. Naveen Kumar, Head, Division of Flower and Medicinal Crops highlighted the importance of Ayurveda Day and the contributions of ICAR-IIHR to the development of medicinal plant varieties and technologies.
Dr. Subrahmanya Kumar emphasized Ayurveda’s role in preventive healthcare, quoting the classical sloka “Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshnam, Athuratya Vikar Prashamanam” in his introductory remarks while Dr. Lalitha B.R. elaborated on the principles of Ayurveda concepts.
Dr. T. K.Behera, Director, ICAR-IIHR, in his Presidential remarks, stressed the “One Health Concept” and research in medicinal and aromatic plants for healthier India. On the occasion medicinal plant saplings were distributed to all the participants by the Director. The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sreenivasa V.
In the second session two guest lectures were organized as part of the 10th Ayurveda day. Dr. Lalitha, gave talk on ‘Home Remedies for Common Ailments and Obesity’. She covered the importance, historical background of Ayurvedic practices in ancient India and covered most common home remedies for common ailments including Joint pains, Diabetes mellitus, Obesity, Skin care and Urinary Tract Infections. She elaborated about the balanced diet and common medicinal crops and their medicinal values.
In the second guest lecture, Dr. Subramanya Kumar, deliberated about the ‘Digital Transformation of Ayurveda-Bridging Tradition and Technology’. He elaborated on the importance of traditional medical system in India, sources for data base collection, different databases like, Integrative Pharmacology, Ayurveda Pharmacology and plant profile. He elaborated on the plant formulations databases. Common medicinal plants saplings were also distributed during the program. The program was attended by about 150 staff members and students of the Institute.
