Capacity building programme on ‘Modern Horticultural Technologies’ conducted for tribal women farmers at ICAR-IIHR on 25-26 September
An on campus program on “Capacity building programme on Modern Horticultural Technologies for Skill Up gradation of Tribal Women Farmers was conducted from 25-09-2025 to 26-09-2026 at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru for tribal farmers from Sulia Taluk of Dakshana District of Karnataka. This program was organized for two days for the purpose of creating awareness among farmers about alternate crops for areca nut and also know about ICAR-IIHR technologies suitable for Dakshana Kannada in collaboration with ICAR-KVK, Dakshina Kannada The training programme was inaugurated. Dr. Prakash Patil Director (i/c) ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. He urged the farmers to adopt the farmers friendly innovative technologies developed by the ICAT-IIHR to improve production, productivity and earn more income per unit area. The programme was initiated with lecture delivered by Dr. T. H. Singh, Principal Scientist (Vegetable Crops) and Nodal Officer of TSP Programme and coordinated by Dr. V. Sankar, Principal Scientist(Vegetable crops), Division of Social sciences and Training and Dr. Chethan Kumar, Senior Scientist (Soil Science). Dr. Senthil Kumar, Head of the Division of Social Science and Training demonstrated the method of application of Arka Microbial Consortia (AMC) in vegetable and fruit crops. Dr. V. K. J. Rao, Retired Principal Scientist (Extension), Division of Social Science and Training delivered lecture about agribusiness and enterpreusrship development in various horticultural technologies. Dr.G.Narayana Swamy, Principal Scientist (Ret) explained to the farmers to adopt scientific management practices for improvement of production and productivity of various horticultural crops for higher yield coupled with more income. Dr.Chethan Kumar, Senior Scientist (Soil Science) provided information about soil sample collection and opined farmers to go for soil test based fertilizer application for precision farming. by Dr. V. Sankar, Principal Scientist (Vegetable crops) briefed about improved cultivation practices for vegetable crops that are suitable for coastal Karnataka and also accompanied to ATIC Centre to understand about the various technologies and technological products. Dr. Reena Rosy Thomas, Principal Scientist (Computer application) demonstrated the mobile app developed by the esteem institution to access the information about technologies, crops and improved cultural practices. Field visits were made to ATIC Centre, Post harvest unit, Mushroom Production unit, demonstration plots of Nursery, vegetable, fruit, flower and coir pith production unit and BESST HORT unit. Tribal farmers were selected from six Gram panchayaths of Sulia Taluk benefitted from this programme and were provided with certificates, vegetable seed kist, bio-fertilizer, bio-pesticide, and Micronutrient mixture, vegetable special micro nutrient and ICAR-IIHR technical bulletin for motivating them to adopt scientific farming practices in horticulture sector. Krishisakhi-Miss. Sulochana was extended support in mobilization of tribal farmers from various villages and also for successful conducting of event at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. Dr.T.J. Ramesha, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) delivered vote of thanks and appraised the issues of tribal farmers and sought for the extended support from the ICAR-IIHR for livelihood improvement. This program was attended by 20 tribal farmers from Sulia Taluk of Dakshana Kannada District of Karnataka along with KVK Coordinator cum Head from Dakshana Karnataka, Mangalore and this program was widely published in social media.
