Sports contingent of ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru has participated in ICAR-Zonal Sports Tournament conducted by ICAR-SBI, Coimbatore in the Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore from 8-11 April 2025. In all 28 ICAR institutes from southern zone along with two deemed to be universities, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and ICAR- Central Institute for Fisheries Education, Mumbai participated in various athletics, individual and team events. The sixty-one-member contingent of ICAR-IIHR comprising twelve women and forty-nine men participated in both individual and team events and exhibited excellent performance. On the bases of prizes won in the events the contingent scored 103 points. ICAR-IIHR bagged the ‘Overall championship of the ICAR-Zonal Sports Tournament-2024’. This is the third consecutive time that the institute has bagged the overall champion of the ICAR South Zone Sports Tournament.

Among the women’s athletic events, Mrs. Venkatalakshmamma bagged gold in discuss throw, Dr. M. R. Rohini bagged silver in shotput, Mrs. Vimala D. bagged silver in Javelin throw, Miss Darshana bagged bronze. The bronze medal in 100- and 200-meter race was bagged by Ms. Meenakshi R. In individual events, Dr. G.R. Smitha secured silver medal in badminton singles and Dr. G.R. Smitha along with Mrs. Venkatalakshmamma bagged gold in badminton doubles. In table tennis singles, Mrs. Lakshmidevi K.C. bagged gold and Dr. G.R. Smitha bagged silver medal. In table tennis doubles Dr. G.R. Smitha and Mrs. Lakshmidevi K.C. bagged gold medal. In both table tennis and badminton mixed doubles, Dr. Anil Nair and Dr. G.R. Smitha secured silver medals. In women’s team event 4x100 meter Relay, team comprising of Ms. Meenakshi, Dr. G.R. Smitha, Ms. Anuradha R.T. and Smt. Venkatalakshmamma bagged gold.

Among men’s individual events, Mr. Anurag Kumar bagged gold in high jump and Mr. Ajit Kumar got bronze medal in 200-meter race. In 5-kilometer cycle race Mr. Velumurugan K. got gold and Mr. H.R. Venkatesh received silver medal. In Men’s 4x100 meter relay team comprising of Rajanna A, Mallesh B., Ajit Kumar and Mr. Kavindra Kumar secured bronze medal. The IIHR contingent also received trophies and medals in the team events. In Kabaddi and Basketball, the teams got gold. In Volleyball (shooting), Volleyball (smashing), Badminton and Cricket team events received silver medals.
