ICAR-IIHR-Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Chettalli organized Demonstration of Coorg Mandarin Rejuvenation Technology in Kodagu on 17 December, 2025

Demonstration on Coorg Mandarin Rejuvenation technology was organized in Dr. Somanna Kollumada’s orchard in Nadugundi village, Ponnampet Taluk, Kodagu District on 17th December, 2025 by the CHES, Chettalli. The orchard consists of about 100 Coorg mandarin plants, approximately 25 years old, planted at a spacing of 7 m × 7 m. Intervention of rejuvenation technology and soil test based nutrient management improved the average fruit yield from 30 kg to 50 kg per plant. The cost of cultivation was about Rs. 900-1000 per plant per annum. The income generated was about Rs. 3000 per plant per annum. This gave the B:C ratio of 3.0 and benefitted the farmer. The result of the rejuvenation and soil test based nutrient application is demonstrated to the 20 Coorg mandarin growers of Kodagu District. Adaptation proper pruning, soil, nutrient, water, pest and disease management had improved the overall health and yield of the orchard. In this programme Dr. Somanna shared his experience, happiness and appreciated the intervention of CHES, Chettalli. Further, he insisted other growers to follow the technology. Dr. Kushalappa, Ex-Dean, College of Forestry, Ponnampet; Staffs of KVK, Gonikoppal Mr. Prabhakar, Mr. Veerendra Kumar, Mrs. Lakshmi, Mr. Benecio Fernandes, and Staffs of CHES, Chettalli Dr. Rajendiran S., Dr. Muralidhara B.M., Dr. Nayan Deepak G., Dr. Ruchitha T. and Mr. Mohan C.M. were participated. Dr. Muralidhara B.M. Senior Scientist and Head (I/c), explained the status of Coorg mandarin in Kodagu and intervention of CHES, Chettalli in Coorg Mandarin Rejuvenation. Dr. Rajendiran S., Senior Scientist discussed the importance of soil testing and soil health and nutrient management. He demonstrated application of fertilizer, Arka microbial consortium (AMC), Trichoderma harzianum, and Citrus Special. Dr. Rani A.T., Scientist, briefed the major pests and diseases of Coorg mandarin and their management. Then scientists-farmers interaction was conducted and all the queries raised by the farmers were discussed and addressed. All the necessary inputs required for Coorg mandarin cultivation was displayed. Nearly 30 participants were present in the programme.
